Post #18: Google Classroom Update, Google Meet Clarifications

Hope you all had a wonderful long weekend! Here are a few more updates. Please continue to reach out for support - happy to attend PLCs, class meetings, team meetings... as needed!

Continue to explore the WIT links. New items added.

**Under For Families - WIT - Digital Resources for School Closure - Families - Families can find information here on how to print from a Chromebook.**

NOW Available in Google Classroom:

  • Create a Google Meet link directly in your Google Classroom! Here are the directions in case you'd like to set that up.
  • Last week I requested that email be turned on for teachers in the @student domain. I've requested it before but they were not able to figure it out. Well, last week they did!! So you will not be able to receive email notifications from google classroom in your teacher@student.waylandk12.ma.us account.
  • Here are notifications that you can modify in Google Classroom.

  • Notification option: An alternative is to download the Google Classroom mobile app on a phone or tablet. Sign-in using your @student.wayland account. Set the notification like you would for other apps. *Note this is only an option as some may find it helpful but certainly not required.*

Google Meet Clarifications:
  • DO NOT invite students via calendar - they can get in the session WITHOUT you.

  • Post Google Meet links in a secure location (GClassroom, Seesaw or Doc/Slide with secure settings) so unknown parties cannot join in.

  • Simplify things for you and your families by reusing Google Meet links. If you create the meet link in a repeating calendar event, the link will not expire until the events are completed. If the event has no end date - then the link works indefinitely (so consider putting an end date). If you create the meet link on meet.google.com - those links expire after 90 days of NO USE.

  • If reusing meet links: Removing students removes permission to be in the current session so they have to be readmitted. Students can still join future sessions and the teacher will see a prompt asking for students to enter the meet.

Remote Learning Examples: I was in a tech chat last Thursday. A few districts shared how their teachers are collaborating during this next phase of learning. If you'd like to take a peek, here are two examples.
