Post #6: XtraMath, Instructional Tools Policy, Wifi Issues

XtraMath - IMPORTANT UPDATE from Leisha Simon:

Dear Elementary Teachers

We are in the process of updating all our Student Data Privacy agreements. More information to follow soon. Please consider participating in your school-based Technology Committee to be included in our conversations!

We have recently discovered that XtraMath no longer will sign a DPA (Data Privacy Agreement) for the free version. You should not be using the free version of XtraMath with our students. If you are using a paid version, would you please let us know.

Instructional Tools Policy - Please remember to check the Instructional Tools Policy when looking to use a website/app that requires student accounts! Our policy as a district is to have a signed Student Data Privacy policy in place BEFORE any student accounts are created. This is to protect the student's data.

Wifi Issues - We are continuing to troubleshoot wifi issues in the building. Here is what I know:

  • Chromebooks - There is a known bug in the Chrome OS. The bug is delaying students' ability to join the network. Goole is working on a solution. No ETA as to when we can expect a solution.
  • iPads - ClassLink sometimes shows a white screen. We are working with ClassLink to determine the issue.

Until we find a solution for Chromebooks and iPads, these are the troubleshooting steps:

  • Stagger student logins

  • Have students log in and then turn their screens to you while you give directions.

  • This gives the device time to connect to the wifi.

  • When students are ready to start, you can have them turn their devices back.

  • Most devices have been ready to go.

  • Restart once

  • Turn off/on Wifi once

  • THEN WAIT

**We have found that restarting over and over again, delays the student from accessing the internet.**

Student Device Power Cords: If a student needs to take home a device (iPad or Chromebook), I have extra power cords in the lab. Please DO NOT fish out any power cords from the carts.

Students Accessing ClassLink on a Home Device: Here is a slideshow explaining how to access ClassLink from a home device (tablet, laptop, or desktop). Feel free to share this with families.
