Post #2: Google Sharing Permissions, Google Services, Printing, Parent Square, Tech Time with Beth

Google Sharing Permissions: If you set the "share" permissions of a Drive file to WPS, that includes both staff AND students. The file will show up in "shared with me". This selection should be used cautiously because students will see the doc/sheet/slide deck if they check there.

*When sharing your schedule, select Staff.

Google Services Changes For Students - In the spring, we shared a letter outlining details regarding a change in student access to several of Google's core services. This is just a reminder that we have turned off the following services for students only:

  • Google Arts & Culture

  • Google Earth

  • Google Maps

  • Google Photos

  • Google Play

  • Google Books

  • Applied Digital Skills

  • YouTube * - embed vs linking to videos

  • Google Translate ** 

* YouTube: Turning YouTube off means that students will not be able to go to YouTube and click on a video link to watch it. Instead, teachers will need to EMBED a YouTube video in a Google Slide, Form, Site, or link the video to a Google Classroom assignment. Students will not be able to search YouTube videos on their student account.  

**Google Translate: Students will still be able to use the translation tool within a Google Doc and in the Chrome browser when requested in a search query.

Printing: I know we all have a lot happening at the beginning of the year. Please be mindful of what you print, where you print, and how many pages you print.



Parent Square: Thank you to those who have jumped into using Parent Square. I know learning not one but two new tools at the beginning of the school year is not ideal. An FAQs slide has been added to the Parent Square presentation I used at our staff meeting. We are still working on gathering some answers, but this is a good start. Keep those questions coming!

With that said, if you answered my poll via Parent Square saying you'd like some support - great! However, I learned that I cannot see participant names. This is a learning curve for everyone.
